2. Don't Fret
Last year I visited the Isle of Iona in Scotland, known as the seat of Celtic spirituality since 600 A.D. I had come for a retreat and was prepared for a profound experience.
Every day we spent time meditating, talking, reading, and walking in the beauty of nature. I was intent on being open to receive the really big download that I just knew was ready to come through.
On the fourth day we all chose to spend the day alone. I climbed to the top of the highest hill on the island and found my spot in the midst of gusty winds and bleating sheep. I read poetry and watched the clouds. I was peaceful and ready. Pen and paper were in hand so that I could capture the coming message in all its grandeur.
After a few minutes of quiet, the message came: "Don't fret." Ah, yes, I thought, a good reminder, okay, got that, go ahead with the big stuff. I waited. Silence. There was nothing more added to the message. "Don't fret" was it in its entirety.
Now if I was the kind of person that had expectations about coming thousands of miles to have a deep spiritual experience and then all I got was a 2 word message, I could have been disappointed. And indeed I was - briefly.
Then I realized there couldn't have been a more useful message for me than this one that could fit on a bumper sticker. If I eliminated fretting as a regular daily activity, what would that make room for in my life? Plenty!
I'm presumptuous enough to think that this message wasn't just for me. That if we all banded together and reduced our fretting by 10% for just one month, we'd have a different world in 30 days. Wanta join me?
3. Practice of the Month
Expect with Confidence! If you've read the book, you know this is the practice for Attracting from the Cycle of Abundance. It's undiluted energy focused on what you want without a wasted ounce focused on what you don't want. And that's all fretting is.
Take a moment to focus on something you are absolutely certain about - that April follows March, that you'll wake up in the same bed you go to sleep in tonight, that your car drives better with the brake off. Notice how that feels right down to the muscles around your eyes and your teeth. (These are great places for holding tension = bracing for the worst.) Confident expectation is a relaxed state - nothing to resist, manage or fear. No sense of urgency.
That relaxed state, that fluid state of ease, is our great ally in releasing the grip of the Trance. Confident expectation is being assured regardless of appearances. Instead of jumping on any of those negative trains of thought that come barreling through our station, we stand at ease letting 'em pass on by knowing that our train is coming.
4. Cool Stuff
The Group Study Guide and the Audio File of the Embodiment Practices are available on the Orders page (sample a preview of each there) designed to make it all the easier to step out of the Trance and into the flow. Choose the combination of Book, Study Guide, and Audio Practices that serves you best and enjoy extra discounts. CD's of the Embodiment Practices are coming soon.

Beyond the Trance
|
Serving
individuals and collectives who are ready to access their greatness,
extinguish the Trance of Scarcity, and make a whopping difference in
their world. Feel free to forward this newsletter to
others.
Volume 1, Number 4, February/March 2006
1. Welcome to the Beyond the Trance ezine. Your comments and questions are always invited. To send Victoria an email, click here.
2. What Are You Reliable For?
The
quick answer is: whatever is habitual in you. Once
something has been practiced enough to become
a habit, you can count on that behavior like you
can count on rice sticking to the pan when overcooked or your dog
wanting to sleep on your bed.
Embodiment
is the result of what we practice repeatedly until it's logged
into our nervous system so that it happens automatically.
Driving a car is a great example. After we're practiced it a lot,
we can even forget that we're driving and somehow still end up at
our destination. (I find that only mildly comforting.)
For the most part, we don't have habits, they have us. The Latin word habitus means
"the physical and constitutional characteristics of an
individual". You could say each of us is a glob of habits or
practices. And from those, our lives and future are
determined.
I
remember leading a workshop years ago when a participant
approached me to say she was so committed to make changes in her life
that she was willing to give up what ever she had to. I
asked her if she was willing to give up her habit of struggle and
suffering. She was actually offended at the thought, for her a
better life could only come from struggle!
Most of us have embodied habits we wouldn't choose
like worrying about the future, judging ourselves and
others, expecting it to be hard, going numb so we don't have
to feel disappointment, even whining. All of these fit
obediently inside the message of the Trance of Scarcity: there is not enough and neither are you, so just get used to it.
We don't need to let the Trance keep pulling our strings. It's
not a matter of changing the circumstances, it's about changing our
inner landscape. The Persian poet Hafiz understood
habits. "Habits are human nature - Why not create some that will
mint Gold?" And indeed we can. WHATEVER we practice, we
become.
You may note that this
newsletter is coming at the very end of the month - revealing one of my
habits: over committing. So I'm taking on a new practice
of not pretending I can do everything and am calling this the
Feb/March issue - without even feeling embarrassed about it!
And I'm sending it whether it's perfect or not.
3. Practice of the Month
Interrupt suffering -
For the next few weeks, keep alert to when the automatic clench shows
up in your mind or your muscle. Except it to happen, particularly
when you're under pressure, and then intentionally choose openness and
flow. Sounds a little too Pollyannaish at first glance, you say?
Here's the deal - the grip of "not enough-ness" has us so thoroughly
convinced that contraction is the only appropriate reaction, we won't
even explore what can happen when we move toward the other end of the
spectrum. Our current habit of contracting actually
cuts us off from our aliveness and creativity so we stay at a
disadvantage.
When you catch yourself fretting, fussing, or forcing,
(a) exhale fully and breathe deep
(b) stand up and fill out your full height while relaxing every muscle you can feel as you shake off the clench (c) enjoy that you've caught the habit in the act and are choosing an upgrade - a smirk might be in order
(d) ask yourself "can I let this be easy?"
Hey, you won't know if it works until you try it.
BEWARE OF HABITS MASQUERADING AS TRUTH!

1. Welcome to the Beyond the Trance

newsletter, the website, Victoria's blog, and anything else about the
Trance of Scarcity. Email Victoria.
2. The Art & Science of Manifestation
If we want to create, generate, and make stuff happen, then manifesting
is the skill to cultivate. That word is often associated with New Age
woo woo but the root word simply means obvious. When something is manifest, it is demonstrated or realized. It lives in the world of IS rather than WANTA BE.
Just to be clear, here's what manifesting ISN'T: hoping and begging,
whining and worrying, pushing and straining, comparing and resenting,
bartering and manipulating, insisting and justifying. Or building the
case for why life is unfair (always good to have ready when faced with
disappointment).
Simply, manifesting is (1) having a clear
vision of what you want (for yourself or for the world), and then (2)
giving yourself fully to the experience of that already being so.
Meister Eckhart said "When the soul wishes to experience something, she
throws an image of the experience before her and enters her own
image." Our modern day term is Act As If.
It requires being
willing to suspend judgment and doubt (not a small thing for the mind
to do) and to operate as if the desired outcome is already realized.
Now that takes a bit of courage because, gee whiz, what if it doesn't
come true? So to be safe, we go half-heartedly toward our dreams and
then wonder why we feel defeated and apathetic. Would Nelson Mandela
ever have lasted in prision if he had lived in defeat? He acted as if
everyday.
The key is to engage every aspect of our being and
to call on our senses to hear, see, taste, smell, touch the new reality
we are claiming. To get deeply related and intimate with this new
reality allows us to slip the bonds of the old limiting reality.
That brings us to life (rather than keeping us distance from it) and
aliveness is always more compelling and generative than whatever we may
be doing to deaden ourselves. Jean Houston observes that many people
live as posthumous versions of themselves. Night of the Living Dead
was a movie, not a suggested lifestyle.
If you want to
manifest certain things in your life, then jump in - like a dog jumps
in the water after his ball. Whole-hearted, unabashedly saying Yes to
life, your life.
3. Practice of the Month
Confident Expectation
As tempting as it is to wait until it arrives and then experience it, that's not how manifestation works. Claim it and live it now.
How you claim it and hold it and inhabit it is key. The more relaxed,
the more effective. Expectation is more potent than desire because we
are unconflicted in our focus of energy. With desire, we may entertain
doubt and grasping. In fact, we're usually incredible hosts to them,
building an extra wing on the house so they can live with us full
time. It would be incongruous to hold any tension or anxiety when we
fully expect something.
Think about the color of your
car. When you walk out to your car the next time, how confident are
you that it will be the same color it was when you parked it? How much
worry or doubt do you have? That's the energy of confident
expectation. Not one ounce of hand-ringing or lip-biting. It's a done
deal.
Yep, it may not manifest in a second so you get to keep
living in the place of Already Is (which is so much more pleasant than
What If It Isn't), fully confidence and fully relaxed.

2. Making Space
I confess, I'm a speeder. On a recent road trip, I watched myself constantly push the speed limit to "keep up". I whizzed past the Rest Stops and View Points so I could keep my place in the pack! I arrived at my destination exhausted. It's a far too familiar theme in my life and one that is finally losing its appeal.
While the fast lane offers speed, it does not and cannot offer depth and perspective - two things that are essential if we are to be effective in the world. Operating in chronic high gear is a pox that we've turned into a cultural addiction.
We lose our sense of timing because we are always pressing forward, pushing into the next moment rather than actually being in this one. Too often we find the wall with our face instead of with our eyes. Ouch!
It's August, the lazy crazy hazy days of summer in the northern hemisphere. Europeans close their businesses for the month or two and go on holiday. We Americans, if we're lucky, take a whole 2 weeks a year. And then pack it full so we don't miss anything.
What if we all took a few days, even one whole day, to just BE? Now I know that's a scary thought for many of us. But here's the pay off. When you let yourself step out of the fast lane and come fully into the moment to be present to what is, you access your innate connection to life and refresh yourself in a way that constant activity just can't do.
Vacation by definition means freedom from occupation, to be empty. To be empty and not occupied makes us available to be informed by life in new ways. For many it's a spiritual practice that dispells the illusion of separation. Sounds like something the world could sure use right now.
If you're serious about getting things done and making your contribution, if you want to increase your bandwidth and sustain your capacity, pull over to the Rest Stops regularly. And come join us in Seattle or San Francisco for Living Into Greatness, the 2-day workshop designed for everyone who's ready for more ease, fulfillment, and connection.
3. Practice of the Month
Hit the REFRESH button
Whatever amount of time you can allow for this, great. Do it as often as you can and extend the time when you can.
Stop. (That in itself can be a radical practice so give yourself lots of credit everytime you do!) Exhale, and take several full breaths not rushing to get to the next one. There is no extra credit for hurrying.
Relinquish the controls for just a minute (more is better, of course, but no need to terrify yourself).
Have no agenda - not even relaxing. Simply be available to life in the moment and let what shows up, show up. Often it will be busy mind making a list for you. Let that pass on through and keep breathing. Stay open and curious.
Then engage in something that is not routine for you. (Feldenkrais bodywork teaches that letting the muscles move in non-habitual ways releases pain and increases flexibility.) You may take a walk where you normally don't go or at a different pace, dance like nobody's watching, draw with your non-dominant hand, lay on your back and let the clouds entertain you, whatever you choose.
Anything that interrupts your habituated (and therefore embodied) PUSH FASTER orientation to life is beneficial. And don't worry about doing it right because it isn't about doing.
